# How Do I Install a Glass Railing System?

Installing glass railing isn't like picking up a kit at the hardware store. #### How the Process Works: Start to Finish

### Step 1: Request a Quote and Choose Your System

The first step is identifying which glass railing system fits your space and connecting with Viewrail for a quote. You'll share your linear footage, stair runs if applicable, and the surfaces you're anchoring to. Viewrail uses that information to recommend the right system, finalize glass specs, and begin the engineering process.

### Step 2: Receive Your Measuring Kit and Capture Your Dimensions

After moving forward with a quote, Viewrail ships you a measuring kit. Every glass project requires precise field measurements because panels are custom-fabricated — there's no trimming to fit on-site.

The measuring kit includes:

* Acrylic template pieces representing the mounting footprint and glass termination points
* A template guide with fields for run type and run length
* Wood screws for temporarily securing templates in place

**How measuring works:** Mount the acrylic templates at each end of your railing run, account for any deck overhang, and measure from the outside edge of one template to the outside edge of the other. Record the run type (straight-to-straight, straight-to-corner, corner-to-straight, or corner-to-corner) and the run length on the back of the template guide. Repeat for every run in your project, then submit everything to Viewrail for engineering.

### Step 3: Engineering Review and Shop Drawings

Your shop drawings will also indicate whether a continuous top cap rail is required for your system and application. Many systems recommend one for stiffness; some commercial or high-load conditions require it.

### Step 5: Installation

Installation varies by system, but the general sequence follows the same logic across all of them:

1. **Lay out and mark anchor locations** based on your shop drawings
2. **Verify your substrate** — confirm backing material and depth meet your system's requirements (typically at least 4 inches of solid backing at anchor points)
3. **Install hardware** — posts, base rail channels, spigots, pins, or integrated tread hardware, depending on your system
4. **Set and plumb glass panels** using the glass moving clamps included with your order
5. **Lock panels in place** per your system-specific instructions
6. **Install top cap rail or handrail** if applicable
7. **Seal and clean** — apply any required sealants and do a final glass cleanup
