How Do I Install a FLIGHT Mono System?

Install a FLIGHT Mono floating stair system with the right prep, tools, and sequence for a smooth straight-run install.

FLIGHT Mono is Viewrail's flagship floating stair system. It uses a single steel stringer and floating wood treads for a clean, open look.

You can install FLIGHT Mono yourself. Every system ships custom-engineered and prefabricated to your specs. No on-site welding is required.

FLIGHT Mono is the only FLIGHT system designed for customer installation. Stack, Cantilever, and Spiral require Viewrail Certified Installers.

Before You Start

Prep Your Site

Before your system ships, make sure your framing is ready. The header at the top and the footer at the bottom both need structural support before install day.

Header Blocking

The header is where the top of the stringer attaches to the upper floor structure. The header plate transfers the full load of the stair into the framing. In most cases, the existing header beam alone is not enough. Add blocking behind it so the lag bolts land in solid material.

Two options meet the minimum requirement:

• Double LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber): LVL is an engineered wood product commonly used in residential framing. For this application, two LVL members are sistered together and installed behind your header beam, braced into the cross floor joists. LVL is a great choice here because it's dimensionally stable — it won't twist, shrink, or split over time.
• Triple 2x construction lumber: Three pieces of standard dimensional lumber fastened together behind the header beam work equally well if LVL isn't available or preferred.

Either approach meets code minimums. What matters is that there is solid, well-fastened backing in place before the header plate is bolted in.

Install blocking before drywall or sheetrock goes up. The header plate must sit flush against solid wood. If finish material sits behind the plate, the connection can weaken under load.

Footer Blocking

The footer plate needs the same support. Add matching blocking at the footer location before install day. Use either a triple 2x assembly or a double LVL.

For concrete subfloors, the slab at the attachment point must be at least 4 inches thick.

Clear the Attachment Surfaces

At both attachment points, the plates need to connect directly to the structural subfloor. Remove any carpet, tile, or other floating surface layers before installation.

Mark and Pre-Drill the Holes

Before installing either plate, mark and pre-drill your bolt holes. Doing this ahead of time makes the install faster and reduces the chance of misalignment once the stringer is raised into position.

Unpack and Verify Your Delivery

Your FLIGHT system arrives in several boxes. Each box is numbered to match your 2D installation drawing. Lay out every component and match it to the drawing before you begin. This speeds up the install and helps you catch shipping issues early as you work through your FLIGHT customization details.

Gather Your Tools

Viewrail includes several specialized tools with your order, including a torque wrench, sockets, and bits. You'll need to supply the following yourself:

• Drill or hammer drill
• Impact driver or socket wrench
• Level
• T-square
• Wood drill bits
• Wood glue
• Silicone sealant

Installing Your FLIGHT Mono: 8 Steps

These steps cover a straight FLIGHT Mono installation. If your system includes turns or another custom condition, use your project-specific instruction manual for those details.

Step 1: Prep the stringer

Secure the attachment plate to each end of the stringer. Follow the torque and fastening sequence in your written installation instructions exactly. The sequence matters for proper load distribution.

Step 2: Mark the header position

Use the measurements from your provided drawing to mark the header plate location. Accurate marks make the lift and alignment much easier.

Step 3: Raise the stringer into position

With one or two helpers, or a come-along winch, raise the stringer and align it to your header marks. Drive one lag bolt to hold it temporarily. Do not fully secure it yet.

Step 4: Install the tread brackets

With the stringer temporarily supported, install all tread brackets. The bottom tread uses a different attachment method because of limited clearance. Your project manual shows that detail.

Step 5: Confirm the stringer is level

Install one tread near the top and one near the bottom. Check that both treads are level. Also check that the tread-to-wall gap stays consistent from top to bottom. If needed, shim the stringer before you continue.

Step 6: Secure the stringer

Once the stringer is level and aligned, add a second lag bolt to the header plate. Then fill the remaining holes in the header and footer plates. Install the cover plates to finish the attachment points.

Step 7: Install the remaining treads

Install the rest of the treads using the supplied fasteners. Follow your drawing and installation manual for placement and sequence.

Step 8: Install the tread bracket covers

Place the magnets onto the pre-installed magnet screws. Run a bead of silicone around each tread and set the covers in place. This gives the stair a clean, hardware-free finish.

Keep It Looking Great

• Interior treads use a conversion varnish. Clean them like any hardwood floor.
