# How Do I Install Rod Railing?

Rod railing gives you the same clean horizontal look as cable, but the install path is simpler in a few key places. This guide walks through the full rod install sequence, from prep and layout to cutting and tensioning the rods.

Rod railing uses posts, a handrail, and horizontal infill just like cable railing. The main difference is the infill material. Rods arrive straight, cut more predictably, and do not need the same ongoing re-tensioning that cable does.

### What this guide covers

* **Prep and code** — what to verify before install day.
* **System choice** — when to use Express, Signature, or DriveTite Rod.
* **Install sequence** — posts, handrail, rod cutting, and final tensioning.

### Before You Start

#### Gather Your Tools

For most rod railing installs, you need:

* Power drill or impact driver
* Tape measure, speed square, and level
* Pencil
* Angle grinder with a thin metal cutting wheel
* Deburring tool
* Allen wrench for tensioning

Because rods arrive straight rather than on a spool, measuring and cutting is usually faster than cable.

#### Sketch the Space

Make a simple sketch of each run and note the length, stair angle, and target railing height. This helps you plan the correct rod lengths, post count, and hardware.

### Step 1: Confirm Code Requirements

Before you order or install, confirm your local railing code.

Key requirements to verify:

* **Guard height** — usually at least 36 inches on level runs, though some jurisdictions require 42 inches.
* **Handrail height** — typically 34 to 38 inches above the stair nosings.
* **4-inch sphere rule** — infill spacing must prevent a 4-inch sphere from passing through.
* **Load requirements** — the top rail and handrail must handle required structural loads.

Viewrail spaces rod runs at 3⅛ inches on center when installed correctly. Always verify local requirements before starting.

### Step 2: Choose Your Rod System

Viewrail offers three main rod install paths.

* **Express** — ready-to-ship metal posts, metal handrail, and rod infill for straightforward DIY installs.
* **Signature** — a fully custom rod system for larger, more complex, or coastal projects.
* **DriveTite Rod** — rod infill hardware for new or existing wood posts.

Rod infill is available in multiple material and finish options, including coastal-ready options for harsher environments.

### Step 3: Measure and Order

You need:

* The length of each level run
* The total length and angle of each stair run
* Your mounting surface type
* The number of rod runs based on railing height

A 36-inch system usually needs 10 rod runs. A 39-inch system usually needs 11. A 42-inch system usually needs 12.

Standard rod lengths range from 4 to 20 feet. For longer runs, couplers can connect rods for a continuous look.

### Step 4: Install the Posts

Keep posts at no more than 4 feet on center. This limits infill deflection and supports the handrail.

Common mounting styles include:

* **Surface mount** for standard deck and landing surfaces
* **Side mount** when you want to preserve deck space
* **Concrete mount** for concrete or other non-wood surfaces

Set the posts in place first. Use a string line to confirm alignment. Then mark, pre-drill, and fasten securely.

### Step 5: Attach the Handrail

Once the posts are secure, attach the handrail brackets and fasten the handrail.

Stair brackets pivot to the stair angle. Corner brackets support clean turns. Metal handrail may need to be cut on site.

### Step 6: Cut, Install, and Tension the Rods

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Measure each run

Measure the rod length for each run carefully before cutting.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Cut the rods

Use an angle grinder with a thin metal cutting wheel to cut each rod to length.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Deburr the ends

Clean each cut end with a deburring tool so the rods install cleanly and safely.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Thread and tension the rods

Thread the rods through the pre-drilled posts, fit the terminal hardware, and tension from the middle run outward until the spacing and deflection are consistent.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Rod installs are usually faster than cable because the rods start straight and do not need crimping on every run in the same way cable does.

### Step 7: Final Check and Maintenance

Before you finish, confirm:

* All posts are plumb and secure
* Rod tension is even across all runs
* The handrail is attached firmly and sits at the right height
* All covers, end caps, and hardware are in place

Rod railing needs less upkeep than cable under normal conditions. Clean the system periodically and inspect the hardware during routine maintenance.
