What Is Powder Coating? Viewrail's Process and Finish Options Explained

Powder coating is how Viewrail protects the metal in your railing system.

It's a finishing process in which dry powder is electrostatically applied to a metal surface, then baked on at high heat to create a hard, bonded shell. That shell keeps the underlying metal sealed against moisture, UV rays, and environmental contaminants.

Here's what you need to know about why it matters, how Viewrail does it, and which finish is right for your project.

Why Aluminum Posts Need Powder Coating

Aluminum doesn't rust the way iron or steel does, it contains no iron, so the traditional rust process doesn't apply. What it does do is oxidize. When raw aluminum is exposed to moisture and air over time, a dull, chalky oxidation layer can begin to form on the surface. Left unsealed, this degrades both the appearance and the integrity of the metal.

Powder coating seals the surface entirely, cutting off that exposure before oxidation takes hold. It also adds color, gloss, and surface hardness that bare aluminum simply can't offer.

How Viewrail Prepares and Coats Its Posts

Getting a powder coat to bond properly, and stay bonded for years, starts long before any powder is applied. Viewrail uses a tightly controlled, multi-step process on every post.

  1. Shot blasting — Each post is blasted with fine media to strip surface contaminants and smooth out micro-inconsistencies in the metal.

  2. Chemical bath series — Posts rotate through a series of chemical baths that clean and condition the surface at a molecular level, leaving it fully prepared to bond with the powder.

  3. Powder application — Dry powder is applied electrostatically to ensure even, complete coverage across the entire surface.

  4. Computerized baking — Posts go through a controlled baking process that superheats the powder and fuses it permanently to the metal.

The result is a consistent, durable finish that's built into the metal, not just sitting on top of it.

Viewrail offers two powder coat options, each rated to a different AAMA performance standard and suited to different environments.

High Performance Powder Coat (AAMA 2604)

Also referred to as Standard powder coat, this is Viewrail's baseline finish. It's formulated with super-durable polyester resins that resist chipping, scratching, and fading under normal outdoor conditions. AAMA 2604 coatings are tested against five years of real-world exposure in South Florida — heat, humidity, and UV included. It's a strong, reliable choice for most residential and light commercial exterior applications.

Superior Performance Powder Coat (AAMA 2605)

Viewrail's top-tier finish. Superior Performance is a fluoropolymer-based coating that delivers the highest resistance to UV fading, color shift, and environmental degradation. It meets the AAMA 2605 specification and comes with a 5-year finish warranty. If your project is in a coastal region, a high-UV climate, or anywhere with elevated humidity or salt exposure, this is the finish to specify.

Maintaining Your Powder Coated Railing

Powder coated posts are low maintenance by design. As long as the surface stays intact and sealed, it will keep protecting the metal underneath.

To keep things looking their best:

  • Clean regularly with mild soap and water

  • Avoid harsh chemical cleaners — they can degrade the finish over time

  • Inspect periodically for chips or scratches, and address any exposed metal promptly to prevent oxidation from starting
