Express vs. Signature Cable Railing: Which One Is Right for Your Project?
Not sure whether to choose Express or Signature cable railing? Here's how they compare on customization, lead time, coastal use, and more.
Viewrail offers two cable railing lines: Express and Signature. They're both built with the same quality materials and the same sleek aesthetic Viewrail is known for, but they're designed for different projects, different timelines, and different levels of customization. Here's how to tell them apart and choose the right one.
If you need the full product-category overview first, start with What is Cable Railing?.
The Short Version
Express is a pre-configured, in-stock system designed for fast delivery and straightforward DIY installation. Signature is a fully custom-engineered system for projects that need more flexibility — more finish options, more post styles, more material choices, and more design support.
If you know your project is relatively simple and you want to get moving quickly, Express is the answer. If your project has complex geometry, specific aesthetic requirements, or a coastal location, Signature is the way to go.
If installation is a big part of your decision, see Can I Install Cable Railing Myself?.
Express Cable Railing
Express is Viewrail's fastest path to a finished railing. Because it's kept in stock and ships in as little as one to three business days from Goshen, Indiana, it's ideal for projects where timeline matters.

What you get with Express
Black, silver, or white aluminum posts — available in 36" and 42" heights with surface mount or side mount options
Pre-drilled and pre-slotted posts — no field drilling required; just mount, run cable, and tension
Single-post corners — most systems require two posts to turn a corner; Express does it with one, opening up your sightlines and reducing material cost
Level and stair configurations — dedicated level and angle post types handle both flat deck runs and stair applications right out of the box
5/32" stainless steel cable, available on 100 ft. or 400 ft. spools
1-year finish warranty on the Standard powder coat
What Express doesn't include
Express comes in three standard finishes for aluminum posts. If you need a different color, different material, or a custom handrail profile, you'll need Signature.
Express is also not suitable for coastal environments. The system uses carbon steel mounting hardware, and the combination of aluminum posts and stainless cable in a saltwater environment can cause galvanic corrosion over time. Express posts are not covered under the Viewrail Coastal Product Warranty, and the system is not recommended for installations within 5 miles of a saltwater coast. If your project is near the water, Signature is the right choice. For more detail on coastal materials and corrosion resistance, see Why is Coastal Warranty Important.
Express is a great fit if you…
Want your railing fast (1–3 business day lead time)
Plan to install it yourself
Have a straightforward deck, balcony, or stair project
Are happy with black, white, or silver colors
Are not within 5 miles of a saltwater coast
Signature Cable Railing
Signature is Viewrail's fully custom cable railing system. You work directly with a Viewrail project team to dial in every detail, including post style, finish, infill type, handrail profile, and more. It takes longer than Express, but the result is a system built precisely for your space.

What you get with Signature
50+ finish options across powder coat and brushed stainless steel
16 handrail types, including metal, wood, and LED-integrated options
9 post mounting styles — surface mount, side mount, core-drill, and more
Multiple infill options:
Cable — the classic look; 5/32" stainless steel
Onyx Rod — 1/4" matte black powder-coated steel rod; sleek and bold
Stainless Rod — 1/4" 2205 stainless steel; no re-tensioning required, always coastal-rated
Steel or aluminum posts — structural aluminum for most applications, or 304/2205 stainless steel for coastal and high-demand environments
Coastal-rated configurations — using 2205 stainless steel components or aluminum with Superior Performance powder coat, Signature can be fully spec'd for saltwater environments
5-year limited finish warranty on Superior Performance powder coat and select finishes
10-year structural warranty on coastal products

The Signature process
Signature isn't something you buy off a shelf, you design it. Here's what that typically looks like:
Submit a quote request with your project details and measurements
Design consultation — a Viewrail specialist reviews your layout, proposes post placement, and helps confirm finishes
Engineering review — post spacing, mount type, and any adjustments to keep the system code-compliant and on budget (simpler projects may skip this step)
Project files and proposal — you receive labeled component lists and PDFs so you can review everything before it goes into production
Production and shipping — your system is custom-manufactured and shipped to you or your installer
If you'd rather not DIY, Viewrail's network of Certified Installers can handle everything from site measurement to finished installation. If you do plan to install it yourself, start with How Do I Install a Cable Railing System?.

Have a coastal or high-exposure environment

Still Not Sure?
The simplest way to decide: if the Express online builder covers your project and matte black works for your space, go with Express. You'll move faster and likely spend less.
If anything about your project falls outside what Express offers — the finish, the location, the complexity — that's what Signature is built for. Reach out to the Viewrail team and they'll help you figure out exactly what you need.
